NOTES

Like H. cohaerens, Hypoxylon multiforme was treated as a member of section Papillata, subsection Papillata by Miller (1961). They differ in the latter fungus having a less than spore-length germ slit and generally redder tones on the stromatal surface. Hypoxylon multiforme occurs on Betula throughout Asia, Europe, and North America. It seems highly host specific.
