NOTES

Miller (1961) relegated H. pouceanum to a variety of H. truncatum. Meanwhile, he also synonymized Nummularia urceolata [º H. urceolatum] with it. Hypoxylon pouceanum differs from H. truncatum mainly in having flattened ascospores and in having an indehiscent perispore and from H. urceolatum mainly in ascospore morphology. This fungus is known only from the type specimen.

The original packet contains three pieces of material glued on a paper card. The two pieces on the left hand side of the card are sterile, but have the appearance of Nemania bipapillata (Berk. & M. A. Curtis) Pouzar [= Hypoxylon subannulatum Henn. & E. Nyman sensu J. H. Miller]. The piece on the right hand is therefore selected as the lectotype. The laterally compressed ascospores and indehiscent perispore are the major reasons that we recognize H. pouceanum as a distinct species.
