Stromata glomerate to effused-pulvinate, usually confluent, with perithecial mounds 1/2 to 1/4 exposed, 0.2-1 cm diam x 0.6-2 mm thick; surface dark reddish brown; blackish granules immediately beneath surface, with KOH-extractable pigments greenish olivaceous (90) or dull green (70); the tissue below the perithecial layer blackish, up to 0.5 mm thick.

Perithecia spherical, 0.4-0.6 (-0.8) mm diam.

Ostioles papillate, encircled with a truncatum-type disc 0.2-0.4 mm diam.

Asci 120-180 mm total length x 4.5-6 mm broad, the spore-bearing parts 70-90 mm long, the stipes 50-95 mm long, with apical ring bluing or not bluing in Melzer's iodine reagent, discoid, 0.5-1 mm high x 1.5-2 mm broad.

Ascospores brown to dark brown, unicellular, ellipsoid-inequilateral, with narrowly rounded ends, 8-10.5 x 4-5 mm, with straight germ slit spore-length; perispore dehiscent in 10% KOH, smooth; epispore smooth.
