NOTES

This fungus resembles D. clavata in having a similar ascospore morphology and in having purplish pigments or apparently lacking KOH-extractable pigments. Daldinia bambusicola differs from D. clavata primarily in being associated with bamboos, in having spherical rather than cylindrical stromata, and in having a Periconiella-like conidiogenous structure. Moreover, Daldinia bambusicola is known to be distributed in southeastern Asia, whereas D. clavata is known only from the American and African tropics. The smooth stromatal surface and minute ostioles of D. bambusicola are reminiscent of D. eschscholzii from which the former differs mainly in having smaller ascospores, in having a different host range, and in having a Periconiella-like conidiogenous structure.
