Stromata cylindrical to somewhat clavate, unbranched or sometimes branched, subsessile or with stout stipe usually bearing constricted rings, solitary to infrequently aggregated, smooth or with inconspicuous to conspicuous perithecial mounds, 1-3.5 cm diam x 1-5.5 cm total length, the stipe up to 2.5 cm long x 0.5-1.5 cm diam; surface brown vinaceous (84), sepia (63), or fuscous (103), blackened and varnished in age; dull reddish brown granules immediately beneath surface, with KOH-extractable pigments dark livid (80), vinaceous gray (116), or without apparent KOH-extractable pigments; the tissue between perithecia whitish, grayish, or brown, pithy to woody; the tissue below the perithecial layer composed of alternating zones, the darker zones dark brown, pithy to woody, 0.2-0.4 mm thick, the lighter zones white to light grayish brown, pithy, becoming fibrous and loosening, 0.7-2 mm thick.

Perithecia obovoid, 0.3-0.5 mm diam x 0.6-1 mm high.

Ostioles obsolete to slightly papillate.

Asci 155-185 mm total length x 6.5-7.5 mm broad, the spore-bearing part 60-75 mm long, the stipe 95-125 mm long, with apical ring bluing in Melzer's iodine reagent, discoid, 0.5 mm high x 2.5-3 mm broad.

Ascospores brown to dark brown, unicellular, ellipsoid-inequilateral, with narrowly rounded ends, 8-11.5 x (3.5-) 4-5.5 mm, with straight germ slit spore-length on convex side; perispore dehiscent in 10% KOH, smooth; epispore smooth.
