NOTES

Hypoxylon dearnessii has been found only in eastern temperate North America thus far. Specimens examined are associated exclusively with maples. Among the Hypoxylon taxa with a dehiscent perispore, Hypoxylon dearnessii is distinctive in having nearly equilateral ascospores with broad ends. Hypoxylon dearnessii and H. ferrugineum have similar stromatal morphology, but have quite different ascospore morphologies.
