NOTES

Hypoxylon rutilum is characterized by having ostioles that are higher than the stromatal surface and scarlet granules. It appears to be consistently on Fagus. Cultures of H. rutilum produce a strong smell reminiscent of coconut oil. Hypoxylon laschii is similar to H. rutilum but differs in having less exposed ostioles and in being consistently on Populus. Hypoxylon erythrostroma also resembles H. rutilum but has a more tropical distribution, more frequently fusoid ascospores with nearly acute ends, and a Nodulisporium-like conidiogenous structure.
