NOTES

Nemania kellermanii is known only from the type specimen. Miller (1961) considered N. kellermanii [as Hypoxylon] to be a synonym of H. quadratum (Schwein.) Ellis & Everh. Despite having similar stromatal features, the two species have quite different ascospores. Ascospores of N. quadrata are inequilateral, light brown to brown, with narrowly rounded ends, 20.5-26 x (8-)8.5-10.5 µm, with an inconspicuous germ slit much less than spore-length. These two fungi appear atypical for Nemania for having a restricted stromatal habit and thus resemble penzigioid Xylaria. However, their stromatal bases, although somewhat constricted, are broadly connected to the substrate. Miller (1961) cited a type specimen of N. kellermanii from the Rehm herbarium at S. Unfortunately, we were unable to locate it.
