The status of the name is uncertain.Hypoxylon diatrypeoides Rehm var. poonense Pande, Bull. Bot. Surv. India 15: 10. 1973; as "poonensis".

This variety is based on depauperate material with the surface of most stromata ruined. The few intact stromata have become blackish. Ascospores are dark brown, ellipsoid-inequilateral, 11-13.5 x 5-6 mm, and have a dehiscent perispore. It is possibly related to H. perforatum (Schwein.: Fr.) Fr.
