SRI LANKA: Central Province, 12.1868, Thwaite, G.H.K. 1081, decorticated wood (K, HOLOTYPE of Sphaeria epixantha).

The type material is immature. Berkeley and Broome (1873) mentioned sulfur-colored mycelium present on the stromata. This name might represent a young stage of H. chrysoconium Berk. & Broome.
