Hypoxylon excelsum Syd. & P. Syd., Ann. Mycol. 10: 80. 1912.

MALAYSIA: Borneo, Hayoep, 1908, Winkler, H. 2330, wood (S, HOLOTYPE of H. excelsum).

Hypoxylon excelsum is similar to Xylaria cranioides (Sacc. & Paol.) Dennis, but has larger ascospores, 41-54 x 12-13 mm. It should be placed in Xylaria.
