U.S.A.: New Jersey, Newfield, 10.1876, Ellis J.B. 569 [= 2343], decorticated wood of Acer, as H. multiforme var. effusum (NY); New Jersey, Newfield, 10.1876, Ellis, J.B., decorticated wood, as H. multiforme var. diffusum (NY).

Fries' type was not found at UPS. This form was combined with Hypoxylon by Cooke and Ellis (1876). From Ellis' herbarium at NY, two specimens were labeled as H. multiforme var. diffusum. Ellis 569 is H. perforatum (Schwein.: Fr.) Fr., whereas the other specimen not bearing any number is H. rubiginosum (Pers.: Fr.) Fr.
