Francis (1975) excluded Sphaeria rostrospora from Anthostomella Sacc. and mentioned that it was considered by Martin (1967b) to be a species of Hypoxylon. Martin (1967b) reported the ascospores being appendiculate. The description in Ellis and Everhart (1892) also mentioned ascospores with a hyaline beak at each end. This fungus is not a Hypoxylon.
