Hypoxylon sphinctericum Bull., Hist. Champ. France I, p. 168. 1791.

According to Löfgren and Tibell (1979), Fries synonymized H. sphinctericum [as "sphinctrinum" by Fries] with Calicium turbinatum Pers. and Sphaeria sphinctrina Sowerby. Sphinctrina Fr. is apparently derived from the species epithet. Sphinctrina was originally defined as having apothecia (Löfgren and Tibell, 1979). Although the identity of H. sphinctericum can not be established, there is little doubt that it does not belong to the Xylariaceae.
