Hypoxylon tormentosum Ces., Atti Accad. Sci. Fis. 8: 19. 1879.

MALAYSIA: Borneo, corticated wood (RO, HOLOTYPE; BPI 11455, ISOTYPE of H. tormentosum).

This fungus has the following characteristics: stromata effused, erumpent; perithecia individually enclosed by a layer of carbonaceous stromatal tissue; ostioles papillate; ascospores light brown to brown, bacilliform, equilateral or nearly so, 6.5-8 x 3.5-4 mm, with a straight spore-length germ slit; perispore indehiscent. It probably belongs to Biscogniauxia Kuntze. Unfortunately, we were unable to find asci and ascal apical rings in the type material, and we are also uncertain if this fungus has bipartite stromata.
