Miller (1961) considered these two names to be synonyms of Hypoxylon sclerophaeum Berk. & M. A. Curtis. Unfortunately, the type was not located at K or PAD. A specimen [BPI 10732] identified as this name by C. G. Lloyd is Hypoxylon polyporum (Starb.) Y.-M. Ju & J. D. Rogers.
