HYPOXYLON PLACENTA (LINK: FR.) SACC. The status of the name is uncertain.Hypoxylon placenta (Link: Fr.) Sacc., Syll. Fung. I, p. 369. 1882; non Kalchbr., 1880. º Sphaeria placenta Link apud Fr., Linnaea 5: 539. 1830; Link: Fr., Syst. Mycol. Index, p. 171. 1832; non Tode, 1791. We were unable to locate the type at B or UPS. This was listed as a synonym of Daldinia concentrica (Bolton: Fr.) Ces. & De Not. by Child (1932). Fries (1830) briefly described this fungus as "hemisphaerico-globosa, extus intusque atra, intus azona, peritheciis periphericis globosis, ostiolis papuloso-hemisphaericis." It is really doubtful that this fungus is a Daldinia because Fries (1830) stressed the azonate nature of the stromata. |
