Ascospores are either regular or variable in shape in a given species. When a species has regular ascospores, they are strongly inequilateral and have a dehiscent perispore. When a species has variable ascospores, they range from equilateral, slightly inequilateral to strongly inequilateral and usually have an indehiscent perispore. It should be noted that, although the ascospore perispore appears smooth by light microscopy, coil-like ornamentation has been shown by electron microscopy in some species with a dehiscent perispore, e.g., Beckett (1976a, 1976b) and Van der Gucht (1993). The ascospore germ slit is spore-length to, infrequently, slightly less than spore-length in all Daldinia species.
