Hypoxylon sphaeriostomum (Schwein.) Sacc., Syll. Fung. 1: 392 (1882).

º Sphaeria sphaeriostoma Schwein., Trans. Amer. Philos. Soc., N. Ser., 4: 193 (1832).

º * Euepixylon sphaeriostomum (Schwein.) Y.-M. Ju & J. D. Rogers, Nova Hedwigia 74: 116 (2002).

USA: Pennsylvania, Bethlehem, on decorticated rotten wood, 1826, L.V.D., Schweinitz, Syn. 1213 (PH [Schweinitz Herb.]-holotype, PH [Collins Coll. no. 41], BPI [C. L. Shear's microscope slide coll.]-isotypes of Sphaeria sphaeriostoma).

Owing to the fact that this fungus is like Euepixylon udum in having an elliptical, lens-like ascospore germination site 6-8 x 2.5-3.5 µm and in having clypeate stromatal tissue, this fungus was combined with Euepixylon by Ju & Rogers (2002). Hypoxylon regale Morg. var. macrosporum J. H. Miller is a synonym.
