TELEOMORPH

Hypoxylon submonticulosum Y.-M. Ju & J. D. Rogers, A Revision of the Genus Hypoxylon, p. 189. 1996.

Stromata effused-pulvinate, with inconspicuous perithecial mounds, 0.3-3 cm long x 0.3-1.5 cm broad x 0.5-0.7 mm thick; surface rust (39) when young, blackish when mature, shiny; blackish woody to carbonaceous tissue immediately beneath surface and between perithecia, without apparent KOH-extractable pigments; the tissue below the perithecial layer inconspicuous.

Perithecia spherical, 0.2-0.3 mm diam.

Ostioles higher than the stromatal surface, minutely conical papillate.

Asci 133-153 mm total length x 6.5-9 mm broad, the spore-bearing parts 73-100 mm long, the stipes 50-72 mm long, with apical ring bluing in Melzer's iodine reagent, discoid, 1.5-2.5 mm high x 2.5-3 mm broad.

Ascospores light brown to brown, unicellular, ellipsoid-inequilateral, with broadly to less frequently narrowly rounded ends, 9-12 (-13.5) x 4-5 mm, with straight to slightly oblique germ slit less than spore-length; perispore indehiscent or, less frequently, dehiscent in 10% KOH, smooth; epispore smooth.
