This fungus is closely related to Rosellinia corticium (Schwein.: Fr.) Sacc. with which it shares most macroscopic and microscopic morphology. Rosellinia merrillii differs from R. corticium mainly in having larger ascospores, 28-35 x 10-12 (-13) mm, and in lacking a cellular appendage on the ascospore.
