Hypoxylon nigropustulatum Hino & Katumoto, Bull. Fac. Agric. Yamaguti Univ. 9: 906. 1958.

JAPAN: Prov. Ugo, Hondo, on culm of Sasa kurilensis, 4 Aug. 1957, Muroi, H. (YAM 21928-holotype of Hypoxylon nigropustulatum).

Hypoxylon nigropustulatum has a dome-shaped ascal apical ring which has also been reported for H. bambusicolum (Speg.) Speg. var. chusqueae Pat. (Ju & Rogers 1994). These two species are also similar in most other features, including having ascospores that frequently bear a cellular appendage. Hypoxylon nigropustulatum and H. bambusicolum var. chusqueae differ primarily in their ascospore size ranges, 19-24 x 7-8.5 µm vs. 22-29 x 9.5-11.5 µm. Hypoxylon nigropustulatum is undoubtedly a xylariaceous fungus and may represent a Nemania species. Nonetheless, the shape of the ascal apical rings is fairly unusual for Nemania; we thus prefer not to make a formal taxonomic decision until more information, especially anamorphic data, is evaluated.
