NOTES

Hypoxylon michelianum is characterized by the perispore being indehiscent in 10% KOH solution, and by the small, slightly concave disc. The layer of white substance on the stromatal surface is striking and has not been observed in other taxa of section Annulata. In old material the white layer is worn off and the underlying black stromatal tissue is exposed, as can be seen in the type specimen of H. michelianum. The only specimens of this fungus that we have seen are from Europe.
