TELEOMORPH

Hypoxylon nothofagi Y.-M. Ju & J. D. Rogers, A Revision of the Genus Hypoxylon, p. 221. 1996.

Stromata effused-pulvinate, plane, 1.7-11 cm long x 0.7-2.5 cm broad x 1 mm thick; surface dark vinaceous (82) or brown vinaceous (84); dull reddish brown granules immediately beneath surface and between perithecia, with KOH-extractable pigments greenish olivaceous (90); the tissue below the perithecial layer inconspicuous.

Perithecia tubular, 0.3-0.4 mm diam x 0.8-1 mm high.

Ostioles papillate, without disc.

Asci 160-210 mm total length x 4.5-6 mm broad, the spore-bearing parts 60-70 mm long, the stipes 100-150 mm long, with apical ring bluing in Melzer's iodine reagent, discoid, 2 mm high x 2 mm broad.

Ascospores brown, unicellular, ellipsoid-inequilateral, with narrowly rounded ends, 7.5-9 x 3.5-4.5 mm, with straight germ slit spore-length; perispore dehiscent in 10% KOH, smooth; epispore smooth.
