NOTES

Sphaeria osculosa might be an earlier name of S. stygia. Miller (1961) pointed out that the type of S. osculosa should be from the East Indies. The only specimen labeled as S. osculosa that we have seen is from Santo Domingo. It appears to be authentic material of Persoon and is undoubtedly H. stygium. Two elements were found under H. stigmoideum at RO. One [MALAYSIA: Borneo, Sarawak, Beccari, O. 252 (RO)] is Biscogniauxia uniapiculata (Penz. & Sacc.) Whalley & Laessře, whereas the other, Beccari 209, is H. stygium. Since H. stigmoideum was published earlier than the basionym of B. uniapiculata, nomenclatural considerations favor selecting Beccari 209 as the lectotype.

Hypoxylon stygium is primarily characterized by having small ostiolar discs, and by having the germ slit on the flattened side of ascospores. Compare with H. atroroseum.
