Stromata applanate, 2-4 cm long x 2-3 cm broad x 1 mm thick; outer dehiscing layer dark brown, thin; mature surface blackish; carbonaceous immediately beneath surface and between perithecia; tissue beneath perithecia inconspicuous.
Perithecia tubular, 0.2-0.4 mm diam x 0.8-0.9 mm high.
Ostioles lower than stromatal surface, with openings punctate, usually overlain with conspicuous white substance.
Asci eight-spored, cylindrical, 135-155 mm total length x 10-12 mm broad, the spore-bearing parts 115-125 mm long, the stipes 15-30 mm long, with apical ring bluing in Melzer's iodine reagent, discoid, 1.5-2.5 mm high x 4.5-5.5 mm broad.
Ascospores brown to dark brown, unicellular, ellipsoid,
nearly equilateral, with narrowly rounded ends, smooth, 15.5-19.5
x 6.5-8.5 mm, with straight germ slit
on both sides.
