Stromata applanate, 0.5-13 cm long x 0.5-5 cm broad x 0.5-1 mm thick; outer dehiscing layer dark brown, thin; mature surface blackish; carbonaceous immediately beneath surface and between perithecia; tissue beneath perithecia inconspicuous.

Perithecia obovoid to tubular, 0.2-0.4 mm diam x 0.4-0.8 mm high.

Ostioles slightly higher than stromatal surface with openings slightly papillate, or lower than stromatal surface with openings punctate and usually surrounded by slightly raised rim, sometimes overlain with white substance.

Asci 70-115 mm total length x 7-10 mm broad, the spore-bearing parts 60-95 mm long, the stipes 10-30 mm long, with apical ring bluing in Melzer's iodine reagent, discoid, 1.5-4 mm high x 3.5-4 mm broad.

Ascospores brown to dark brown, unicellular, ellipsoid, nearly equilateral, with narrowly to, less frequently, broadly rounded ends, smooth, 8.5-15 x 5-7.5 mm, with straight germ slit spore-length.
