NOTES

This fungus is a large-spored variety of B. capnodes. Miller (1961) recognized var. australe (Cooke) J. H. Miller and var. rumpens (Cooke) J. H. Miller as two distinct varieties of Hypoxylon nummularium Bull.: Fr. [º Biscogniauxia nummularia (Bull.: Fr.) Kuntze]. However, he did not distinguish these two varieties unequivocally. The ascospore size ranges that he gave for these two varieties are largely overlapping: 14-24 x 8-14 mm for var. australe and 14-20 x 9-12 mm for var. rumpens. We therefore consider them to be convarietal. Miller (1961) treated Hypoxylon ellipticum Cooke & Massee and Nummularia anthracodes (Fr.: Fr.) Cooke var. gliricidiae Rehm as synonyms of H. nummularium var. australe. Hypoxylon ellipticum is a different Biscogniauxia (see the entry "pusilla" in LIST OF NAMES herein), whereas N. anthracodes var. gliricidiae is Camillea tinctor (Berk.) Laessøe, J. D. Rogers, & Whalley (Ju and Rogers, 1996).
