Stromata raised-discoid, with concave surface, 3.5-7 mm diam x 2-3 mm thick, with dark brown to black, distinct raised margins originating from outer dehiscing layer; mature surface blackish; dark brown, woody immediately beneath surface and between perithecia, with carbonaceous tissue encasing each individual ostiole; tissue beneath perithecia composed largely of host tissue; tissue of margins 0.1-0.2 mm thick, carbonaceous, extending downwards into substrate.

Perithecia obovoid, 0.3-0.5 mm diam x 0.5-1 mm high.

Ostioles at the same level as or slightly lower than stromatal surface, with openings smooth to slightly punctate, usually overlain with white substance.

Asci 170-200 mm total length x 12-14 mm broad, the spore-bearing parts 130-160 mm long, the stipes 25-40 mm long, with apical ring bluing or not bluing in Melzer's iodine reagent, discoid, 2.5-3 mm high x 5-5.5 mm broad.

Ascospores brown to dark brown, unicellular, subglobose, equilateral, with broadly rounded ends, smooth, 13-16.5 x 9.5-13.5 mm, with sigmoid germ slit spore-length.
