NOTES

Both B. philippinensis and B. pithodes have large, appendaged ascospores with a broad, faint germ slit. They differ in the latter having a white outer dehiscing stromatal layer and coarsely papillate ostioles.

Hypoxylon arecarium (Fr.: Fr.) Mont. [º Sphaeria arecaria Fr.: Fr.] may belong here. However, it was said to grow on trunks of a palm tree. See Ju and Rogers (1996) for comments on H. arecarium.
