Stromata raised-discoid, with concave surface, 0.3-1.5 cm diam x 2-2.5 mm thick, with dark brown, distinct raised margins originating from outer dehiscing layer; mature surface black; dark brown, woody immediately beneath surface and between perithecia, with carbonaceous tissue encasing each individual ostiole; tissue beneath perithecia 1-1.7 mm thick, composed of whitish, coriaceous fungal tissue mixed with plant tissue; tissue of margins and bottoms 0.2-0.3 mm thick, dark brown, woody, with embedded carbonaceous fragments.

Perithecia tubular, 0.2-0.4 mm diam x 0.8-1.5 mm high.

Ostioles higher than stromatal surface with openings coarsely papillate or, less frequently, at the same level as stromatal surface.

Asci 70-120 mm total length x 5-6 mm broad, the spore-bearing parts 60-100 mm long, the stipes 10-25 mm long, with apical ring bluing at base in Melzer's iodine reagent, discoid, 2 mm high x 2.5-3 mm broad.

Ascospores brown to dark brown, unicellular, ellipsoid to fusoid, nearly equilateral, with narrowly rounded ends, smooth, (8-) 9-14 x (4-) 4.5-6 mm, with straight germ slit spore-length on both sides.
