Stromata applanate, 0.5-6 cm long x 0.5-4 cm broad x 0.4-0.7 mm thick; outer dehiscing layer dark brown, thin; mature surface black; carbonaceous immediately beneath surface and between perithecia; tissue beneath perithecia inconspicuous.

Perithecia obovoid, 0.2-0.3 mm diam x 0.3-0.6 mm high.

Ostioles at the same level as or lower than stromatal surface, with openings punctate, usually surrounded by slightly raised rim, sometimes overlain with white substance.

Asci 75-130 mm total length x 5.5-7 mm broad, the spore-bearing part 65-105 mm long, the stipes 10-30 mm long, with apical ring bluing in Melzer's iodine reagent, discoid, 2.5-3 mm high x 3.5 mm broad.

Ascospores brown, ellipsoid, inequilateral to nearly equilateral, with one end narrowly to broadly rounded and the other bearing a hyaline or pale brown cellular appendage 2-2.5 mm long x 2-3 mm broad, smooth, (9-) 10-14 (not including appendage) x 5-7 mm, with straight, spore-length or, less frequently, slightly less than spore-length germ slit on either more convex or less convex side.
