The anamorph of Creosphaeria sassafras, producing elongated conidia from conidiogenous cells that proliferate sympodially or percurrently, resembles that of Hypoxylon microplacum (Berk. & M. A. Curtis) J. H. Miller (Glawe and Rogers, 1986). Conidia of the latter species tend to be dry.
