NOTES

This fungus is similar to D. fissa in having KOH-extractable pigments purplish or lacking apparent pigments and in having gelatinous, whitish lighter zones in the stromata. Although they have similar ascospore size ranges, their ascospore shape is different. Daldinia gelatinosa has strongly inequilateral ascospores, whereas D. fissa has slightly inequilateral to equilateral ascospores. Moreover, the ascospore perispore of D. gelatinosa is always dehiscent in KOH; that of D. fissa is only infrequently dehiscent in KOH. Daldinia gelatinosa and D. mexicana appear to be closely related. They differ mainly in the stromatal pigments extracted with KOH. It also greatly resembles D. childiae from which it is most easily separable on KOH-extractable pigments.
