Daldinia macrospora San Martín, Y.-M. Ju, & J. D. Rogers, Mycotaxon 61: 274. 1997.

Stromata turbinate, short stipitate, wrinkled, lacking perithecial mounds, 3 cm diam x 2.7 cm high; surface grayish sepia (106); dull brown granules immediately beneath surface, with KOH-extractable pigments dark livid (80); the tissue between perithecia grayish brown, pithy to woody; the tissue below the perithecial layer composed of alternating zones, the darker zones dark brown, pithy to woody, 0.8 mm thick, the lighter zones white, gelatinous when fresh, disintegrating and becoming loculate when dry, 1-1.3 mm thick.

Perithecia tubular, 0.4-0.5 mm diam x 1.6-2 mm high.

Ostioles papillate.

Asci fragmentary, with apical ring bluing in Melzer's iodine reagent, discoid, 1 mm high x 4 mm broad.

Ascospores brown, unicellular, ellipsoid-inequilateral, with narrowly rounded ends, 22.5-30 x 8.5-10.5 mm, with straight germ slit spore-length on convex side; perispore dehiscent in 10% KOH, smooth; epispore smooth.
