NOTES

Daldinia petriniae is known only from Europe thus far. It is similar to D. eschscholzii from which it differs in having conspicuously papillate ostioles, in having a larger ascospore size range in average, in having larger conidia, and frequently in having annellated proliferation in conidiogenous loci indicating percurrent conidiogenous cell proliferation. Daldinia petriniae is also similar to D. loculata from which it differs mainly in having strongly inequilateral ascospores and in having a dehiscent ascospore perispore. It is not yet known if the young stromata of D. petriniae have gelatinous material in the lighter concentric zones as does D. grandis. Daldinia petriniae is equivalent to D. occidentalis sensu Petrini and Müller (1986). The anamorph as described by Petrini and Müller (1986) from culture is much as described herein. Conidia described by them from stromata range larger, but we did not observe conidia on stromata. Also compare with D. concentrica.
