TELEOMORPH

Hypoxylon aeruginosum J. H. Miller var. macrosporum J. D. Rogers apud J. D. Rogers & Samuels, Mycotaxon 22: 371. 1985.

Stromata pulvinate, plane to with inconspicuous perithecial mounds, 2-7 mm diam x 0.8-1 mm thick; surface dark cyan blue (27); blackish granules immediately beneath surface and between perithecia, without apparent KOH-extractable pigments; the tissue below the perithecial layer black, 0.3-0.5 mm thick.

Perithecia obovoid to tubular, 0.1-0.2 mm diam x 0.3-0.4 mm high.

Ostioles lower than the stromatal surface.

Asci 104-113 mm total length x 8-10 mm broad, the spore-bearing parts 70-78 mm long, the stipes 31-36 mm long, with apical ring bluing in Melzer's iodine reagent, discoid, 0.7 mm high x 2.5-3 mm broad.

Ascospores light brown to brown, unicellular, ellipsoid, nearly equilateral, with broadly to less frequently narrowly rounded ends, 11.5-13.5 x 5-6 mm, with straight germ slit less than to nearly spore-length; perispore indehiscent in 10% KOH; epispore smooth.
