Hypoxylon aucklandiae Y.-M. Ju & J. D. Rogers, A Revision of the Genus Hypoxylon, p. 90. 1996.

Stromata pulvinate, plane, 0.4-2 cm diam x 1.2-1.5 mm thick; surface sepia (63) or brown vinaceous (84); dull reddish brown granules immediately beneath surface and between perithecia, with KOH-extractable pigments amber (47), honey (64), or umber (9); the tissue below the perithecial layer up to 1 mm thick.

Perithecia spherical, 0.2-0.4 mm diam.

Ostioles lower than the stromatal surface.

Asci 120-155 mm total length x 6.5-8 mm broad, the spore-bearing parts 80-100 mm long, the stipes 40-65 mm long, with apical ring bluing in Melzer's iodine reagent, discoid, 0.5-1 mm high x 2.5-3 mm broad.

Ascospores brown to dark brown, unicellular, ellipsoid-inequilateral, with narrowly rounded ends, 10-13 x 5-6 (-6.5) mm, with straight germ slit spore-length; perispore indehiscent in 10% KOH; epispore smooth.
