Stromata erumpent, discoid, usually encircled with ruptured epidermal tissue, plane or with inconspicuous to conspicuous perithecial mounds, usually wrinkled between ostioles, 2-8 mm diam x 0.5-0.8 mm thick; surface brown vinaceous (84), sepia (63), or dark brick (60); orange brown granules immediately beneath surface and between perithecia, with KOH-extractable pigments orange (7); the tissue below the perithecial layer inconspicuous.

Perithecia spherical to obovoid, (0.2-) 0.3-0.5 mm diam x 0.4-0.7 mm high.

Ostioles lower than the stromatal surface.

Asci 140-170 mm total length x 8-11 mm broad, the spore-bearing parts 66-86 mm long, the stipes 58-90 mm long, with apical ring highly reduced or lacking, not bluing in Melzer's iodine reagent.

Ascospores brown to dark brown, unicellular, ellipsoid-inequilateral, strongly curved, with narrowly to broadly rounded ends, (9-) 9.5-12 x 5-6 mm, with straight to slightly sigmoid germ slit spore-length; perispore dehiscent in 10% KOH, with inconspicuous coil-like ornamentation; epispore smooth.
