NOTES
The Hennings type at B was destroyed. The duplicate at S is therefore selected as the lectotype. Miller (1961) cited two type specimens for H. rubiginosum var. tropica: the type of an unpublished name, H. ferrugineum var. brasiliense Theiss. [BRAZIL: São Leopoldo, 1906, Rick, J. 125 (BPI 6349)], in the "SPECIMENS EXAMINED", and a Rick specimen at Lloyd's herbarium of BPI as no. 10529 on plate 7. Specimen no. 10529 was not found at BPI, but was located at GAM as no. 12781. Since Miller (1961) photographed stromata and probably ascospores from specimen no. 10529, this material is selected as the lectotype of H. rubiginosum var. tropica. Specimen BPI 6349 is H. sclerophaeum.
Hypoxylon cinnabarinum is closely related to H. crocopeplum. These two taxa differ in
the former having nearly equilateral ascospores with perispore frequently indehiscent in
10% KOH. Johnston and McKenzie C246 is the only specimen of H. cinnabarinum
that we have seen with dehiscent perispores. It is from Chatham Islands of New Zealand.
Nonetheless, the anamorph and cultures obtained from this specimen are much like those
from other specimens with indehiscent perispores. Miller (1961) listed Nummularia
cinnabarina as a synonym of H. jecorinum.
They are different mainly in ascospore morphology and in anamorphic features. Also compare
with H. subcrocopeplum.
