Hypoxylon croceum J. H. Miller, Mycologia 25: 323. 1933.

= Hypoxylon semitruncatum J. H. Miller apud Chardon & Toro, Monogr. Univ. Puerto Rico, B., ser. 2: 205. 1934.

= Hypoxylon occidentale Ellis & Morgan ex P. Martin, J. S. African Bot. 35: 191. 1969; [nom. inval., ICBN Art. 37.1]; J. S. African Bot. 42: 82. 1976; non Ellis & Everh. 1894; [nom. rejic., ICBN Art. 64.1].

Stromata glomerate to pulvinate, with very conspicuous to almost naked perithecial mounds, 0.2-1.2 cm long x 0.2-0.7 cm broad x 0.5-1.6 mm thick; surface fulvous (43) when young, sepia (63) or fuscous (103) when aged; dark brown woody tissue immediately beneath surface and between perithecia, with KOH-extractable pigments isabelline (65) or hazel (88); the tissue below the perithecial layer dark brown, woody, up to 1 mm thick.

Perithecia spherical, (0.2-) 0.3-0.4 mm diam.

Ostioles conspicuously higher than the stromatal surface, papillate.

Asci 104-140 mm total length x 6-7 mm broad, the spore-bearing parts 70-90 mm long, the stipes 29-54 mm long, with apical ring bluing in Melzer's iodine reagent, discoid, 1 mm high x 2.5-3 mm broad.

Ascospores brown, unicellular, ellipsoid to oblong ovoid, nearly equilateral, with narrowly to less frequently broadly rounded ends, 8.5-12 (-13.5) x 4-5 mm, with straight germ slit less than to nearly spore-length; perispore indehiscent in 10% KOH; epispore smooth.
