Hypoxylon fusoideosporum Y.-M. Ju & J. D. Rogers, A Revision of the Genus Hypoxylon, p. 124. 1996.

Stromata pulvinate to glomerate, with inconspicuous to conspicuous perithecial mounds, 3-23 mm diam x 0.8-0.9 mm thick; surface brown vinaceous (84) or dark vinaceous (82); reddish brown granules immediately beneath surface and between perithecia, with KOH-extractable pigments luteous (12); the tissue below the perithecial layer inconspicuous.

Perithecia obovoid to tubular, 0.3-0.4 mm diam x 0.6-0.7 mm high.

Ostioles lower than the stromatal surface, sometimes encircled with raised doughnut-like stromatal tissue.

Asci 215-235 mm total length x 14.5-17 mm broad, the spore-bearing parts 140-160 mm long, the stipes 73-81 mm long, with apical ring bluing in Melzer's iodine reagent, discoid, 1-1.3 mm high x 4.3-4.8 mm broad.

Ascospores blackish brown, unicellular, ellipsoid-inequilateral, with narrowly rounded ends sometimes pinched, 22-32 x (9-) 10-13 (-14) mm, with straight germ slit much less than spore-length; perispore indehiscent in 10% KOH; epispore smooth.
