Hypoxylon gilbertsonii Y.-M. Ju & J. D. Rogers, A Revision of the Genus Hypoxylon, p. 125. 1996.

Stromata pulvinate to effused-pulvinate, plane or with inconspicuous perithecial mounds, 0.3-6 cm diam x 0.5 mm thick; surface fawn (87) or umber (9); blackish granules immediately beneath surface and between perithecia, with KOH-extractable pigments hazel (88); the tissue below the perithecial layer inconspicuous.

Perithecia obovoid, 0.1-0.2 mm diam x 0.2-0.3 mm high.

Ostioles lower than the stromatal surface.

Asci 110-130 mm total length x 5-6.3 mm broad, the spore-bearing parts 55-65 mm long, the stipes 50-65 mm long, with apical ring lightly bluing in Melzer's iodine reagent, discoid, 0.3 mm high x 1.5 mm broad.

Ascospores brown, unicellular, ellipsoid, nearly equilateral, with broadly rounded ends, 7-8.5 x 4-4.5 mm, with straight germ slit slightly less than to nearly spore-length; perispore indehiscent in 10% KOH; epispore smooth.
