Hypoxylon julianii L. E. Petrini apud L. E. Petrini & Müller, Mycol. Helv. 1: 525. 1986.

Stromata pulvinate to effused-pulvinate, plane or with inconspicuous perithecial mounds, 1.5-12 mm long x 1-4 mm broad x 0.4-0.8 mm thick; surface dark brick (60) or grayish sepia (106), becoming fuscous (103); orange to orange red granules immediately beneath surface and between perithecia, with KOH-extractable pigments orange (7); the tissue below the perithecial layer inconspicuous.

Perithecia spherical, 0.2-0.4 mm diam.

Ostioles lower than to slightly higher than the stromatal surface.

Asci 126-207 mm total length x 8-11 mm broad, the spore-bearing parts 100-130 mm long, the stipes 27-80 (-100) mm long, with apical ring bluing in Melzer's iodine reagent, discoid, 2.5 mm high x 3-4 mm broad.

Ascospores brown to dark brown, unicellular, ellipsoid-inequilateral, with narrowly rounded ends, 14.5-18 (-20) x 6-7.5 (-8) mm, with straight germ slit spore-length; perispore dehiscent in 10% KOH, with inconspicuous coil-like ornamentation; epispore smooth.
