Hypoxylon kretzschmarioides Y.-M. Ju & J. D. Rogers, A Revision of the Genus Hypoxylon, p. 139. 1996.

Stromata peltate, centrally attached on stout, branched, coalescent stipes, with crenate margins, with inconspicuous perithecial mounds, wrinkled between perithecial elevations, 2.3-4.5 cm diam x 0.9-1.2 cm high; surface brown vinaceous (84) or chestnut (40) on top, black on lateral side and on stipe; dull orange brown or brown granules immediately beneath surface, without apparent KOH-extractable pigments; the tissue below the perithecial layer massive, blackish, up to 1 cm thick, extending upwards into the space between perithecia.

Perithecia long tubular, 0.3-0.5 mm diam x 2-3 mm high.

Ostioles lower than the stromatal surface.

Asci not found.

Ascospores dark brown, unicellular, ellipsoid-inequilateral, with narrowly rounded ends to nearly acute ends, (12-) 13-16 x 5-6 mm, with straight germ slit less than spore-length; perispore dehiscent in 10% KOH, smooth; epispore smooth.
