Hypoxylon lividicolor Y.-M. Ju & J. D. Rogers, A Revision of the Genus Hypoxylon, p. 144. 1996.

Stromata effused-pulvinate, with inconspicuous perithecial mounds, 0.8-3.8 cm diam x ca. 2.5 mm thick; surface chestnut (40); black granules immediately beneath surface and between perithecia, with KOH-extractable pigments dark livid (80); the tissue below the perithecial layer conspicuous, black, ca. 2 mm thick.

Perithecia tubular to long tubular, 0.2-0.4 mm diam x 0.5-1.3 mm high.

Ostioles lower than the stromatal surface.

Asci 135-160 mm total length x 6-7 mm broad, the spore-bearing parts 70-80 mm long, the stipes 65-80 mm long, with apical ring bluing in Melzer's iodine reagent, discoid, 0.7 mm high x 2.5 mm broad.

Ascospores dark brown, unicellular, ellipsoid-inequilateral, with narrowly rounded ends, 11-12.5 x 4.5-5 mm, with straight to slightly sigmoid germ slit spore-length; perispore dehiscent in 10% KOH, smooth to with inconspicuous coil-like ornamentation; epispore smooth.
