TELEOMORPH

Hypoxylon megalosporum Speg., Anales Mus. Nac. Hist. Nat. Buenos Aires 6: 265. 1898.

Stromata glomerate to pulvinate, with conspicuous perithecial mounds, 1-3 mm diam x 0.8-1.2 mm thick; surface becoming blackish; dark brown granules immediately beneath surface and between perithecia, with KOH-extractable pigments isabelline (65); the tissue below the perithecial layer inconspicuous.

Perithecia globose, 0.5-1 mm diam.

Ostioles slightly higher than the stromatal surface.

Asci not observed.

Ascospores blackish brown, unicellular, subglobose, ellipsoid to pyriform, nearly equilateral, with broadly rounded ends, sometimes with one end slightly pinched, 30-37 x 19-25 mm, with straight germ slit less than spore-length; perispore indehiscent in 10% KOH; epispore smooth.
