Hypoxylon nothofagicola Y.-M. Ju & J. D. Rogers, A Revision of the Genus Hypoxylon, p. 155. 1996.

Stromata pulvinate, constricted at base, plane or with inconspicuous perithecial mounds, (0.1-) 0.3-2 cm diam x 1-2.5 mm thick; surface buff (45), vinaceous buff (86), or fawn (87), becoming fuscous (103) when aged; buff or ochraceous granules immediately beneath surface and between perithecia, without apparent KOH-extractable pigments or with very dilute fulvous (43) pigments; the tissue below the perithecial layer dark brown, up to 1.5 mm thick, usually partially extending into the space between perithecia.

Perithecia obovoid, 0.2-0.4 mm diam x 0.4-0.7 mm high.

Ostioles lower than the stromatal surface.

Asci 145-200 mm total length x 5.5-7 mm broad, the spore-bearing parts 70-80 mm long, the stipes 70-130 mm long, with apical ring bluing in Melzer's iodine reagent, discoid, 0.5-1 mm high x 2-2.5 mm broad.

Ascospores brown to dark brown, unicellular, ellipsoid, nearly equilateral, with narrowly rounded ends, 8-12 x 4-5 mm, with straight germ slit spore-length; perispore indehiscent in 10% KOH; epispore smooth.
