Stromata hemispherical to pulvinate, constricted at base, plane or with inconspicuous to conspicuous perithecial mounds, (0.15-) 0.3-4.5 cm diam x 1.5-8 (-11) mm thick; surface brown vinaceous (84), dark brick (60), sepia (63), or chestnut (40); dark reddish brown or blackish granules immediately beneath surface, with KOH-extractable pigments olivaceous (48), greenish olivaceous (90), isabelline (65), or dull green (70), or infrequently without apparent pigments; the tissue below the perithecial layer massive, dark grayish brown to black, 1-6 (-9) mm thick, extending into the space between perithecia.

Perithecia long tubular, 0.3-0.6 mm diam x (0.6-) 0.8-2 mm high.

Ostioles lower than the stromatal surface.

Asci 140-170 mm total length x 7.5-11 mm broad, the spore-bearing parts 60-90 mm long, the stipes 70-90 mm long, with apical ring bluing in Melzer's iodine reagent, discoid, 0.5-1 mm high x 2.5-3 mm broad.

Ascospores brown to dark brown, unicellular, ellipsoid-inequilateral, with narrowly rounded ends, 8.5-18.5 x 4.5-8 (-8.5) mm, with straight germ slit spore-length; perispore dehiscent in 10% KOH, smooth; epispore smooth.
