TELEOMORPH

Hypoxylon rectangulosporum Y.-M. Ju, J. D. Rogers, & Samuels apud J. D. Rogers, Y.-M. Ju &, Hemmes, Mycologia 84: 166. 1992.

Stromata more or less applanate, fragmentary but probably widespreading, with inconspicuous to conspicuous perithecial mounds, 0.8-1 mm thick; surface ochreous (44); brownish yellow granules immediately beneath surface and between perithecia, with KOH-extractable pigments pale ochreous (44); the tissue below the perithecial layer inconspicuous.

Perithecia spherical to obovoid, 0.2-0.4 mm diam x 0.3-0.5 mm high.

Ostioles lower than the stromatal surface.

Asci ca. 120 mm total length x 5-6 mm broad, the spore-bearing parts ca. 60 mm long, the stipes ca. 60 mm long, with apical ring bluing in Melzer's iodine reagent, discoid, 1 mm high x 2.5 mm broad.

Ascospores brown, unicellular, rectangular to barrel-shaped, (7-) 7.5-9.5 (-10.5) x (3.5-) 4.5-5 mm, apparently lacking germ slit; perispore indehiscent in 10% KOH; epispore ornamented with parallel ridges.
